Hinjewadi gang-rape case; 3 accused sentenced for life

A sessions court in the city on Friday sentenced the three accused in the Hinjewadi gang-rape case that rocked the city in April 2010 to life imprisonment. The trio was also fined Rs18,000 each.
Addressing the accused in a packed courtroom, additional sessions judge WK Sangle pronounced the order and held that Subhash Hiralal Bhosale (33) and Ranjit Shahaji Gade (26) of Maan village, and Ganesh Uttam Kamble (27) of Thergaon had conspired together in the case.

Gade and Kamble worked as autorickshaw drivers in the city, while Bhosale was as a cab driver with a call centre.
Sangle said, “The accused not only caused physical injuries to the victim but also hurt her dignity, honour and reputation. Also, the accused had taken advantage of the victim’s trust. It is not only a crime against the woman, it is a crime against society.”

The victim, a 26-year-old US-returned married woman, had accepted a lift in the convicts’ Indica car (MH14 AV3015), presuming it to be a shared taxi, at a bus stop near her aunt’s apartment in Kaspate Vasti, where she was staying. A resident of Nagpur and a post-graduate in hospital administration, she had come to the city 15 days prior to the incident as her husband, who works in a reputed IT firm, was transferred to the firm’s Hinjewadi centre.

The trio raped the woman at Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi on the night of April 1-2, while she was on her way for a job interview on Bhandarkar Road. Such was the audacity of the culprits that they travelled with the woman in the car for about 8 hours, before raping her at an isolated spot.

The court ordered auction of the car, three cellphones, including a BlackBerry, seized from the accused and deposit the amount in the state government’s treasury.

The court completed the hearing in record time and announced the verdict within 18 months of the incident.

The team which investigated the case comprised the then police inspector (crime) Nandkishore Bhosale-Patil, assistant police inspector Dhananjay Jagdale, police sub-inspector Prabhakar Pawar, assistant sub-inspector Surve and head constables KS Shelke, Hanif Shaikh and Sanas.
